CAIGE Newsletter - June 2012
Hello everyone, Welcome to our June newsletter. We do not have a lot to report this month, so we will keep it short and simple. During the month of May, the GRDC conducted a review of the CAIGE project. Some of you may have been contacted by the review panel to answer questions about the project activities and outputs, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your cooperation. We do not have any feedback from the GRDC as yet, but we will keep you posted on the outcome. The sowing season is well underway by now and we are keeping our fingers crossed that this will be a good year for all of us. In the meantime, if you want more detailed information about the trials and what is going on in the CAIGE project, remember to check out our website caigeproject.org.au. Till next time! Best regards Sandra Micallef 0416 331 101
2012 Shipment & Seed IncreaseThe 2012 seed shipment from CIMMYT and ICARDA, which arrived in Australia in early December, will be released from quarantine very soon. This material which consists of 504 lines - 124 ICARDA lines (ZIZ12), 234 ESWYT lines from CIMMYT (ZWB12), 146 SAWYT lines from CIMMYT (ZWW12) - will then be multiplied in the field in two locations and grown in trials in 2013. To see a full list of each nursery imported, go to the CAIGE Website >>Material Evaluation >>Quarantine >> 2012
2012 CAIGE trialsThe CAIGE material to be evaluated in the field this year has been sown in 4 locations - Wongan Hills in WA (Intergrain), Roseworthy in SA (AGT), Junee (Longreach PB) and Narrabri (USyd) both in NSW.
ICARDA pedigreesThe ICARDA pedigrees for the 2012 shipment, have been entered in the IWIS3 database, and been given a GID (germplasm identification number). You can find an updated ZIZ12 germplasm list on the CAIGE website.
CAIGE Yield Trials annual tourThe annual CAIGE Yield Trials tour will be held during the last two weeks of October. We do not have any definitive dates yet. CIMMYT and ICARDA breeders are invited to join us on this tour to see their germplasm growing under Australian conditions. Since there are only 4 trials this year, we will be visiting all the sites. We would also encourage our local breeders to join us on any part of the tour for the opportunity to interact with the CIMMYT and ICARDA breeders. Please let us know if you have any questions about this tour. More information will be posted on the website as soon as it is available.
2013 Wheat Breeding AssemblyThe next Wheat Breeding Assembly will be held in Brisbane in July 2013. Check out the website for more information: http://www.wheatbreedingassembly.com.au
